KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT WHEN:

Proverbs 11: 9,11,13

Pr 11:9 An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered. Pr 11:11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. Pr 11:13 A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

This is something I have had in my Bible for some time now .. years in fact

KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT WHEN:

In the heat of anger;
Pr 14:17 He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.

You dont have all the facts:
Pr 18:13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

You haven't verified the story:
Pr 29:20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

Tempted to joke about sin:
Pr 14:9 Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.

Ashamed of your words later:
Pr 18:8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

You want to appear wise:
Pr 17:28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

It would destroy a friendship:
Pr 16:28 A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

It would destroy a reputation:
Pr 16:27 An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.

When you may have to eat your words later:
Pr 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

More than once:
Pr 19:13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. (ugh funny how it always mentions a wife with this nagging huh?)

It's time to listen:
Pr 13:1 A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

When you should be working instead, and when there will be ALL talk and NO do!:
Pr 14:23 In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury.

Of course these have mostly been used "after the fact" with my children, but hey it's worth the lesson in most cases, and many times stops REpeat offenders
